Consoles are relatively tame: a modern console pulls around 150-200W in a game and much less in menus. A mainstream gaming PC lands around 300-400W under load, while an enthusiast rig with a top-tier GPU and a high-refresh monitor can pull 600W or more. The monitor, especially a large high-refresh display, adds a real chunk on top. Because idle and load draw are so different, the biggest realistic saving is simply not leaving a powerful machine running at full tilt when you have stopped playing.

Idle vs full load is the whole story
A gaming PC’s draw is not one number — it swings from tens of watts at idle to several hundred under load. The cost depends on hours actually spent gaming at full tilt. Set the wattage to your machine’s in-game draw and the hours to real play time; do not average in the hours it sits at the desktop.
The graphics card dominates. A high-end GPU can pull more than the rest of the system combined, and pushing high frame rates or 4K keeps it near its power ceiling. A large high-refresh monitor adds another 30-70W that is easy to forget in the estimate.
How to cut your gaming pc / console running cost
Do not leave it running under load
A powerful PC left crunching or idling in-game overnight wastes the most power. Use sleep/rest mode — consoles drop to a fraction of a watt, and a PC idles far below its gaming draw.
Cap the frame rate
Limiting FPS to your monitor’s refresh rate stops the GPU running flat out for frames you cannot see, cutting power draw and heat with no visible downside.
Enable console rest / PC sleep
Rest and sleep modes cut standby draw dramatically. Disabling background downloads-while-rest on consoles trims it further.
Undervolt the GPU
For enthusiasts, a modest GPU undervolt can shave tens of watts under load with little or no performance loss — real savings for heavy daily players.
