How to calculate your electricity bill
The basic formula
Your energy cost is simply your usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh) multiplied by your rate per kWh. For example, 600 kWh at $0.17/kWh is $102. Most bills then add a fixed monthly (supply) charge and taxes on top.
Calculating from appliance power
If you don't know your total kWh, use the “By power” mode. Multiply an appliance's wattage by the hours used per day, divide by 1,000 to get daily kWh, then multiply by the days per month.
Tiered (stepped) tariffs
Many regions charge more per kWh as you use more. The “Tiered rate” mode lets you define each block and its price, then splits your usage across the tiers automatically — just like your utility does.
Common gotchas
Bills can include supply/standing charges, seasonal rates, and taxes that vary by location. Treat these results as close estimates and always reconcile with your official statement.
