Four ways to split a shared electricity bill

Equal split

The total is divided equally between everyone in the household. It works best when usage and time spent at home are roughly similar for all housemates.

By days stayed

If someone travelled or moved in or out partway through the billing period, each share is weighted by the days they actually lived there. The tool computes person-days automatically so a half-month tenant only pays for their half.

By room size

Assign each person a weight — square footage, or just a bigger number for a larger room — and the bill is split in proportion. Useful when a master bedroom clearly uses more space and power than a box room.

Fixed + one heavy user

The fixed service charge is split equally. From the usage cost, each person’s own extra usage — a space heater or AC unit running in their room — is billed straight to them first, and only the remainder is shared equally. This is the fix for the most common roommate argument: why should everyone pay for the AC in one person’s room?
