Appliance Upgrade ROI Calculator
Thinking of replacing an old AC, fridge, or water heater with an efficient model? See the yearly energy saving, how long it takes to pay back, and the net saving over its lifetime.

How much less the new unit uses
Price minus any rebate or trade-in
The new unit is assumed to use 1,200 kWh/yr — 40% less than the old one — saving 800 kWh every year. Payback compares that saving against the upgrade cost.

Is an efficient upgrade worth it?
Payback vs. lifespan is the real test
An upgrade only makes financial sense if it pays back within the years you will actually keep it. If a fridge pays back in 6 years and you will own it for 14, the last 8 years are pure saving. If payback exceeds its life, the numbers do not add up on energy alone.
The old unit is usually the energy hog
Efficiency standards have improved dramatically, so a 12-15 year old fridge or AC can use two to three times the power of a modern equivalent. The bigger and older the current appliance, the stronger the case for replacing it early.
Count rebates and trade-ins
Utility rebates, manufacturer discounts, and trade-in credits all reduce the effective upgrade cost. Enter the net price you actually pay, not the sticker price, so the payback reflects your real out-of-pocket cost.
Don’t replace something that still works cheaply
For low-usage appliances the saving may never justify an early replacement — it is often greener and cheaper to run them until they fail. This calculator helps you tell the high-impact upgrades apart from the ones that are not worth rushing.
