Understanding appliance running costs
Watts, hours, and kWh
An appliance’s running cost depends on its power (watts), how long it runs, and your electricity rate. Multiply watts by hours, divide by 1,000 for kWh, then multiply by your rate.
Why 24/7 devices matter
A low-wattage device like a fridge or router seems cheap, but running continuously means its yearly cost can rival appliances you only use occasionally.
Find your energy hogs
Heating and cooling — air conditioners, electric heaters, dryers, and water heaters — usually dominate a home’s bill. Target these first for the biggest savings.
Use real numbers when you can
Typical wattages are shown as defaults, but your actual appliance may differ. Check the label or nameplate for its real rating for a more accurate estimate.
